On a normal day, he maneuvers around as Nhlakaniphu Nqobizitha Makhanya, but when armed with his signature weapons of choice, he is DJ Voqul. Born smack middle in the 80’s in Soweto/Dlamini, South AfricaPretoria, his musical influence on the decks span from the latest Hip Hop to the early 90’s RnB and Hip Hop that heavily shaped the game and him. and raised in the capital city where he currently resides.

But it was never Hip Hop in the beginning, this is exposed by his first ever vinyl, a house vinyl, Latin Lover by Masters at Work, the change came when he watched fellow DJ, DJ Leeby invite him to a gig, where he dropped a Hip Hop set that converted Voqul’s musical religion to Hip Hop, and he’s never turned back having played at most major club and open air parties in Pretoria and holding residency at the hottest spot in his neighbourhood, Ram Square Café. When asked on how he shot up to being seen as one of Pretoria hottest Hip Hop DJ. He says that it’s a perfect balance of playing what the crowd wants but directing them with what he thinks they should be listening to and feeling with every track, get that balance right and you own a crowd.

Off the decks, he reveals Clark Kent/Superman nature can be seen from his God fearing and yet belief in freedom of expression, telling it like it. Living each day like your last, shaking off the hate of what he does and convincing them to respect what he does thru his skill, which is countered by still learning patience is a virtue and recently overcoming the self-doubt that he is not good as people say he is.

For those lucky enough to know him, will know He’s a sucker for the Number 4 off the McDonalds McMeal menu, a guy easily guy off by DJ politics and very opinionated of the fact that local artists must get business minded, focusing more on the people, start sourcing better quality beats and making good music they can be really proud of especially club bangers without the fear of being labeled a sell out because that’s what DJ’s play and people want from them. But his own words, He’s just another humble guy in love with scratching, influenced by 2 local greats in the Hip Hop DJing game, DJ Bionic and DJ Ready D and inspired internationally by DJ Jazzy Jeff.

When asked on what future projects he would be working on, his response…”will let you know pretty soon”…Come On!!!! Whatever they are, this is one man all eyes need to be focused on…big things coming thru…
