Great news - we have been informed that Soopa Stars - Feel good song has recently been played numerous times in the Big Brother Amplified house past weekend. A bonus to the debuts who just entered their 20s. Soopa Stars, who's been mentored and managed by Bling G Entertainment, has been causing havoc on radio stations whereever they go and are said to be returning soon from their Botswana Tour and readying themselves for a Limpopo one. February begins: L-Skillz commemorate and Soopa Stars continues to love!!!

This month marks 2 years I have been working with one of the legendary original motswako originators, L-Skillz. Too many, it came as a surprise when they saw his brief-interview on the latest issue of Hype mag (pg. 19) when they labelled him from Mafikeng (known to many as Maf-Town), while as he actually is a Pretoria boy (CapCity).

Nuff of the politics tho, I bring to you a track that we did last year commemorating where we come from, "Golden City",

CapCity, Rap city. This was brought about due to the past 2010WC and City of Tshwane. Full details of the compilation will be forwarded when requested, therefore to cut the long story short, we were the only hip hop act in that project. To bring the essence of South Africa and vibe of the city, I choose a simple yet complicated song to most to understand the lingo.

Now that L-Skillz is back home, working hard as a solo artist (remember former group, Crowded

about: Born MMM Mahlangu to an anti-apartheid activist slash bank robber slash playwright father and an entrepreneurial mother, MaliQ had the training of keeping the illusive balance between business and the arts at an early age. And not without a touch of healthy street cred(ibility). After matriculating in 2000 he unwittingly got involved with street hustle types dabbling in fast money but soon pulled out, visited the Sudan for some time and in his own words "came back home/ splitting domes with these ghetto poems". MaliQ describes his style of rap as simply smArt rap. A loving family man, dedicated activist to the cause of "freedom again" and entrepreneur, he insists that his music is just an extension of these roles. Having burst onto the scene as one quarter of the group Ba4za, now recognised as "the original godfathers of of Cap City rap", there is also much to say about MaliQ the serial trendsetter, not least of which is his blog streetsheet.co.za, voted the no.1 hip hop blog by Hype magazine in 2009. To date MaliQ has released two street albums, Official Bootlegs Volume One, which he first tried to modestly dismiss as "a bunch of tracks i put together for the Red Bull Music Academy which I was invited to in Seattle, USA in the summer of 2005". But it was clear to all after receiving raving reviews from critics at home and abroad that this was no ordinary bunch of songs; with the bulk of production done by fellow Cap City beat extrodinaire Nyambz. Then came the unusually titled follow up in 2009, Sleepless in Seattle/ Cap City On My Mind (nominated for Best Mixtape in the Hype Awards 2009), a tribute he says to his love for arts, film and fashion. 2010 saw the final coming together of MaliQ's greatest passions, music and fashion, with the opening of the HHH-ShoP concept store and the recording process of what he promises will be his greatest musical work to date, the magnum opus A Mic & A Dream which you are now holding in your hands. But before that, there's the taster prequel mixtape released online in the form I Have A Dream. Finally the trilogy will be completed in 2011/2012 season in the form of (It Was All) A Dream Differed which will also be backed up by a doccie film tracing the come up of Maliq, the man and the musician. Simply a story that must be told.
And to think it all began in the the dusty township streets of Mamelodi, the New Orleans of South Africa, miming Nas rhymes just trying to pick up girls in junior high school in his teens. Growing up between exile, Mamelodi and in the former apartheid homeland of his native tribe the colourful Ndebeles, his diverse musical and general artistic influence remains a balance between these places- global in influence yet local in relevance. Or is it vis a vis. He's not sure yet, and that doesn't seem to bother him much. MyBoba is a charismatic local hip-hop artist born Kgaugelo Kabelo Bogopa in Atteridgeville west of Pretoria. He is the next generation of Hip-Hop in the South African music scene.
Last year MyBoba put-out a promotional cd called "Bobalicious Ep" which contained four tracks.

The EP was an instant hit with thee of the four tracks getting air-play and an overwhelming response from the public."Tshwane Boom" a track on the EP debut at number 3 on the Metro fm Local Lop10 Unsigned Countdown, another track "Go Eng" got mad rotation on Yfm and 5fm and is still getting air-play even today. "Phly Girl” also from the EP reached number1 on TUT Top Stereo Top 40Count Down. MyBoba was also featured in two issues of the Hype Magazine.

Due to the success of the Ep MyBoba started working on His 2010 album, magnificently titled "ALTER EGO" scheduled for releaes in July 2010 and the launch for the album is scheduled for the end of August 2010. INSPIRATION: A TRUE FORCE IN HIPHOP TO BE REKONED WITH

Inspiration is a collective of like-minded individuals who came together due to their common love for the art of hiphop. Moeti Damane known as San The Instromonumentalist is a multitalented and a multifaceted producer/mc who has been in the industry close on 10 years honing his skills in his home country of Lesotho. He came to South Africa to further his studies in economics and is currently doing his masters at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa. It is here that he met like-minded individuals who excel and thrive on the beautiful art that is known as hiphop. It is through this love that he met his fellow partner in beat making Mark Sunners also known as Alias.

Mark has lived, schooled and worked in Grahamstown for the passed 14 years. Collectively they have produced an instrumental hiphop album called “Inspiration: Pieces of our broken mind” which received rave reviews and has garnered the collective a large following worldwide, and 2 mixtapes that go by the name Reinvention which garnered the talents of producers and mc’s locally and from all over the world which have also earned them an even larger following. San and Alias have created many soundscapes for artists covering 4 countries in Africa and 3 continents. This just proves that music and specifically hiphop is indeed a universal language.
Currently Inspiration is working on their much anticipated following to their very well received first offering. Their new project which is called “Inspiration: Numb3rs & Alphabets” is a new take on what an instrumental hiphop album should be, but you’ll have to get the album to experience its magic. Another multitalented local mc/producer known as Self from Krusch Enterprises has lent his unending talents and is executive producing the current project. In their latest single, Big Urban get back on the scene by poking fun at it. In a day and age (especially in Brooklyn) where the term "hipster" is thrown around without regard, Big Urban looks to spell out the meaning, in no uncertain terms, for those who have forgotten the origin of the label. Emcee Krayola Spectrum lays it out plainly when he states, "Your mother is a hipster / Ain't no doubt about it / Seen her at the cool place/ She had on an outfit / She's a cynic / Seen her at the clinic / She made a point to point out all the celebrities." Though it may be just as in vogue to talk about hipsters as it is to make fun of them, Big Urban has a flawless approach to the topic which, therefore, makes it all the more hilarious. Producer Scott Thorough's beat sounds like he dunked The Cool Kids in the Gowanus Canal and then sampled them, and the resulting sparse beat helps put more focus on Krayo's confrontational lyrics. Be on the lookout for Big Urban's debut EP It's Not So Much The Heat, It's The Humidity, coming soon via Embedded Records.

Big Urban is the collaboration of emcee Krayola Spectrum on the mic and producer Scott Thorough on everything else. Both native to Brooklyn, Kray and Scott are members of the Nuclear Family, a Brooklyn hip-hop collective also including Baje One, DJ Snafu, Tone Tank, Probe Cellsplitter and N.E.M.C. Kray and Tone Tank make up the group Iller Than Theirs, who released their self-titled debut album on Embedded Records in 2007 and a follow-up, Wash, Rinse EP, in 2008. Scott is also a member of The Boys & Girls Club and also does production for Baje and Snafu's group Junk Science. Big Urban describes their music as "a failed attempt to make popular commercial rap music that failed horribly but came out sounding weird and interesting anyway." Their debut EP It's Not So Much The Heat, It's The Humidity will be released via Embedded Records this summer.

The grandiose 80's-style synth licks that bump throughout are held together by a bass-heavy, low-end drumbeat, courtesy of up-and-coming producer Vanderslice. The result is a huge sound that reflects the big picture iCON is trying to relate in the hook: the emotions of struggle and the effect and change they can have on a person. iCON raps, "I put my best in, gave it all it takes / And at the end of the day met a fall from grace." Hailing from Philadelphia, iCON the Mic King has had a long career and first gained notoriety on the battle circuit. Winner of several rap battle competitions around the globe, iCON proved his ability to create lyrics on the spot, and achieved success in this arena until 2001, when he officially retired from battling to pursue composition and recording as a solo artist. iCON had been making music before he gained fame as a battle rapper and decided to focus on his studio chops. In 2002, he released Music for Bootleggas, which he sold in person and via his website. Awar Background:
Awar is a native New Yorker who resides in Albany. In 2005 he released his critically acclaimed solo album, Glory Days, which slipped below most hip-hop listeners radar due to limited distribution. He has been immersed in the NYC indie hip-hop culture for years, and has been a convincing factor in putting his Upstate New York area on the map. He is currently in the lab working with some of the best artists & producers in the game for his up-coming solo effort, The Laws of Nature. He is also the lead emcee of a live band orchestrated by DeeJay Tone, and one half of a duo known as Popular Strangers, which also includes his friend and long-time collaborator, iCON the Mic King.

Well, Blaq Poet, with the release of his new album, Tha Blaqprint on the way, is taking some time out to give fans an inside glimpse into his life with Tha Blaqprint EPK. The video follows Blaq Poet as he and DJ Premier are interviewed by the legendry DJ Tony Touch on Shade45, and during the interview Poet and Preemo speak on the upcoming album, the squashing of Poet’s long-held beef with KRS-One, and more. Closing out the interview, Blaq Poet lets supporters know he hasn’t lost a step, spitting an exclusive freestyle. Speaking of exclusive, the EPK is also full of never-before-seen performance footage from a show in Tokyo, Japan as Poet and Preemo tear down the stage and even perform a few songs featured on Tha Blaqprint. Blaq Poet, a Queensbridge, NY native, first made a name for himself in 1987, entering his name into the legendary battle of Queens vs. The Bronx with his song "Beat You Down," a scathing attack on KRS-One. Later, honoring a dead friend and namesake, he formed the hardcore rap group Screwball, comprised of other QB spitters Hostyle, Solo, and Poet’s cousin KL. Elsewhere, he appeared on the anthemic LP Nas Presents Queensbridge’s Finest, alongside Jungle and Cormega on “Straight Outta Q.B.” Blaq Poet’s refusal to dilute his subject matter or soften his cadence attracted the interest of rap’s most legendary producer, DJ Premier. Preemo, along with fellow luminaries Pete Rock and Marley Marl, laced Screwball’s Y2K album with Poet’s beloved boom-bap. A second album, Loyalty, would follow the next year, thereafter the Screwed Up compilation in 2004. Premier also lent his sonic signature to Poet’s 2006 solid solo debut, Rewind: Deja Screw. Preemo then inked Blaq Poet to his own Year Round Records label. Blaq Poet's new album, Tha Blaqprint, will be available this spring via Year Round Records via Fat Beats Distribution.

In an effort to spread the message of uninfluenced and unconditional love, Keelay & Zaire bring us "Alright With Me," the second official single from their debut album, Ridin High. Kee & Zee's smoothed out keys and bouncy bass provide the perfect backdrop for Dminor to spread his wings and take off. A hip-hop/soul vocalist from Los Angeles, Derek "Dminor" Young started his recording career at the age of 7 and has since produced or been featured on projects with artists such as Othello, Supastition, Styles of Beyond, Lovespirals, Muneshine, Emilio "Raks One" Rojas, MF Grimm, Louis Logic, and many more. His soul-filled voice dominates the first two-thirds of the track, as he sings passionately of the feelings he has for his lady, and the lack of interest he has in hearing what anyone else has to say about it; he knows they dig each other and to him that's all that matters. The song concludes with a special cameo from Phonte of Little Brother. Phonte describes his relationship by using the phrase "punch-drunk love;" the type of love where you can't even think straight when you're in the presence of your significant other. Phonte plays on this phrase when he says, "...Punch-drunk love we stay liquored up / 151 proof shining through the sunroof, let your hair down, girl, I gotta give it up to you."

Ill Bill is still working hard in 2009 after completing his sophomore album The Hour of Reprisal and a forty-date tour last year. Representing his group La Coka Nostra, which is comprised of Slain and former House of Pain members Everlast, Danny Boy, and DJ Lethal, Ill Bill performs his most personal song, "My Uncle," live on Fearless Music TV. Check out the video for the performance with DJ Eclipse backing Bill up.

Bill explains the background of the song: "When I was a kid, I looked up to Howie. My parents split when I was little and my mom was at work all the time. My grandmother raised me and my uncle was always around. Now that I'm older, I know that he was a heroin addict with all kinds of severe issues but as a kid, I had no idea what heroin addiction was. Naming the label after him was a joke at first. It wasn't until much later that it took on a deeper meaning. It was my way of attaching something positive to a person who had a huge, positive impact on me" states the MC. Bill continues “He had the potential for greatness but ended up going down the wrong path. Me including him in my music is my way of giving back."

To shoot the video, Bisc1 joined forces with Carl Weston, the legendary, original producer of graffiti videos since the late 1980's, and graffiti documentarian through his production company Video Graf Productions. Weston, whose cult-classic videos were an original inspiration on Bisc's own graffiti, does masterful work directing and producing this video for the "The Strange Love," bringing Bisc's words to life with stunning nighttime visuals and shots of Bisc1 getting busy. The Background:

A native of Massachusetts by way of Connecticut, Bisc1 moved to NYC 10 years ago and quickly made a name for himself DJ'ing at clubs, distributing mixtapes, and in creative circles. The Song:

"Sounds Like Love" is a song that speaks true to its title. The combination of Illa J's sexy LL Cool J approach to his verses with the smooth jazzy vocalizations of Debi Nova on top of the soulful beat produce the sounds of love in this joint. But this isn't the type of love you might assume; instead Illa is speaking about his devotion to his relationship with one particular lady. You learn very quickly that he's wrapped up in this girl when he says, "And if we have a problem, we speak face to face, start solving / This relationship I put my all into." The Background:

When Jay Dee passed away from complications relating to lupus in February 2006, he left behind an extraordinary legacy of production work, including hits for Common, Janet Jackson, and Busta Rhymes. One mother lode of previously untouched beats dates from his time working on the Pharcyde's sophomore album, Labcabincalifornia (Delicious Vinyl, 1995). As Delicious Vinyl owner and founder Michael "Mike Floss" Ross explains: "From '95 through '98 Jay Dee was my go-to guy for hot beats and remixes. He was always making beats, always. So there was a select amount of tracks that he composed for me during that time, tracks as good as anything he'd done, only they never got used. When I finally met Illa J last year, I gave him a CD containing those unreleased beats."

In a case of pure serendipity, 21 year-old Illa J had just relocated from Detroit to Los Angeles and constructed a studio built using Jay Dee's recording equipment. He dubbed it Yancey Boys Studios in tribute to their fraternal bond. "Dilla was 12 years older than me," Illa J says. "So back in the day in Detroit I was just a little kid, sitting on the stairs in our house, watching him make those first beats for Slum Village. I always felt my brother's tracks and had an instinct for what I wanted to do over them." When Illa J set to work in early '08 recording the album, the project flowed quickly as he entered the proverbial can't miss zone. The name of the studio rightly became the title of the finished album, Yancey Boys, which is available online and in stores everywhere on Delicious Vinyl Records.

His first trip to the “Motherland” kicked off with a visit to Soweto on the 10th of December where he was hosted by the Tomorrow Trust which is an organisation aimed at spreading awareness over the issue of child headed households and other challenges faced by the youth. This was of no surprise since Haiti born Wyclef is an activist and humanitarian of note.

Aside from a private invites only gig at The Bassline in Newtown tonight, Jozi, unfortunately there are no scheduled gigs lined up for Wyclef during this visit, “I wanted my first visit to SA to be a learning experience and not be about Wyclef the superstar. I really wanted people to learn about Wyclef the person first and it is something that I usually do with places that I feel supernaturally connected to” he commented. But there is wind of a private performance tonight somewhere in Jozi.

He brought a fitting gift with during his trip, a song he composed to celebrate the life of late legend Lucky Dube, which he played for the assembled press. “Lucky Dube was one of the warmest people I knew” he said as he spoke about the legend. “I did a song for him which is not a song of mourning but a celebration of his life which I wanted to only release after my first visit to South Africa”.

People who do feature on his latest album Carnival Volume II: Memoirs of an Immigrant include Lil Wayne, Akon, Chamillionaire, Paul Simon, Shakira and T.I. let’s hope some SA talent features on the next one!

Well... seeing that we gunning so seriously for '09, I thot how about I change the layout for a short period. But before I go, I will be giving yo'll a whole lot of stuff,news, interviews, downloads and more.

So, today Im gonna share something interesting... and before you know it, you will realize how precious Life is. I mean, charish the people you have no matter what their profession and status is, what they are in your eyes is just a reflection, be with them till the end to share such stories.

Questlove vs. Jay Dee: The “Little Brother” Beat Story

There was a small airport in detroit that had direct flights to jersey and nyc that me and com use to take so much i swear they were gonna offer us stock in the business. it was early 1999 and this was before the jet blueitization of america. matter of fact, america looked down on those small companies after one of them crashed some months before. now we take that shit like its no thing.
anywho. we got word of a blizzard that was coming to the D and com wanted to take no risks and wanted to leave asap so he could make a show. so that left me dilla and frank of frank n dank.

i decided to stick to my normal schedule and stay til monday when i was scheduled to leave.
com decides to take the sunday afternoon jawn on the fly. of course i say he’s overreacting and im proven wrong once there was about 7 inches on the floor a few hours later. frank nitty laughs at me cause now im stuck in the D. we actually make the most of it. ran to blockbuster to stock up on flicks (detroit is the only place on earth street cats will let prince get away with murder so it was nice to rent under the cherry moon without cringing in front of non prince experts. we also rented my new favorite film of all B films Hav Plenty. stocked up on food. and for the first time ever just chilled for 2 days without the prime motivation being “work”. but of course that dont mean dilla didn’t provide me with the most amazing display of workmanship ive ever seen.

i mean i knew dude was the crazy when skillz let me hear a beat tape.

and i knew dude wasn’t right when booty brown played me a precabincalifornia.

and i knew i wouldn’t be the same when dangleo and tip played me the ENTIRE fantastic cassette over the phone LONG DISTANCE to germany (my bill was $382 bucks and WORTH EVERY FUCKING CENT)

and i knew i was in for a treat the many times i came to the crib.

and i knew i was witnessing history when him and pete rock re created half of “mecca and the soul brother” in the basement the weekend “dynamite” was created.

but man…..

what i learned eavesdropping 8am the following day made me a believer. that shit made me the stan of ALL stans.

if you are on my computer and need to find dilla. go to genre, and if he had something to do with it? it will be known for its tag: DILLA is GOD.

i won’t go into reasons why….for it could be longer than this post. and at this rate its just baiting those who disagree or who refuse to see it or who just wanna be contradictory (aka okayplayers lol)

so i heard this bassline playing for like a good 30 mins

initially i was asleep on the couch upstairs so i knew the bassline from pete’s interlude. which i thought “oh he’s gonna recreate that interlude”

so i came downstairs and asked what he’s up to and he was like

so then he plays a beat for like 40 mins straight.

—now this is the first straight up beat i saw him make from scratch. most of the time he just grabs the ram file and blamo the beat is up (day we first met the “got til its gone” parts were already in the machine and he just created “let’s start” for tribe so i had missed those)

first thing i notice is his patience factor….when i make beats i play the record on 45 im skipping parts i aint got time to listen to a record over and over and over and over again….

i ask him about this and he said its better to suffer for 30 mins with a record than to skim through the shit and next thing you know you hear someone else use a part you coulda freaked better but cause of lack of patience you opted not to.

hmmm novel thought.

so i asked which approach is his gonna take….and he said he wanted to see if there was another juicy part for him to take…

so now we a half hour into it i was like “well…..there are no clean parts…..roy is talking all over that shit over and over….its impossible to find a juicy spot.”

lol i wonder if he was appeasing me like “you mere mortal do you not know i created heaven and earth in 7 days? muahahahahahaah” in his head.

he just said

“yuuup….pssshhh man…..i dunno how imma freak it”

so he made a cassette copy for his range and we grabbed food before it was time to take me to the airport.

we went to greektown and came back and he decided before he was going to put the record to bed (this aint the first time he gave up on a loop….the breath and stop sample frustrated him so much he gave me the record to which he would reluctantly find something to give to tip on a last minute attempt) so before the airport he decided to record every piece of the song that had 0 talking on it.

so its like…

an hour later and he has made about 20 pads on the 3000 with samples no longer than half a second each.

he even did a “be my guest” and let me get on to see if i could make some chitterlings off the table scraps from the big house.

nothing.

he retired the thought and drove me to the airport.

i got home and he left a message on my machine.

“whoooooooooooooooooooooooo!! yo! i figured it out!!!!”

when i heard it my jaw dropped.

i was speechless. again. to understand dilla you must first immerse yourself in the music that he uses to create beats. and only when you hear this song more than 20 times you will soon see how fucking impossible it is to make this beat as a mere person (so what is JP up to by the way?)

then i was like “yo pete is gonna be fucked up when he hears THIS shit!”

dilla: NONONONONONONONONO!! naw man….you can’t let him hear this man i cant afford that!
?uest: afford what? this shit is a miracle!!
dilla: nah man….like i dont want no tension. that’s my idol i dont wanna give off the impression that im trying to outshine him….
?uest: but dog im saying if you shine then…..

dilla: yeah man dont let that shit get out man….i just do it for practice….
?uest: wait….so this beat is never going to see the light of day ever? you just made it and lost sweat over it for…..sport?

thank god…..kweli had a cassette which had this beat on it for like 15 secs.

they looped it from the cassette, but it was too late and he shrugged it off….

but man……that humility.

if i found a way to bust somebodys ass for the world to see?

The Song:

Illa J pulls out the funk and soul for "Strugglin'," off his freshly dropped album, Yancey Boys. Over one of Dilla's more minimal beats, Illa J raps (and shows off his singing voice a bit) about an artist trying to make it in the biz. As he says in the chorus, "I'm 'bout to take you on a ride / of a struggling artist / It ain't no easy slide / You gotta hustle the hardest." With a brother like J Dilla, Illa had a good model to look up to, but that doesn't mean it was smooth sailing trying to get his message out there. With a fierce dedication to his music and lyrical skill that he continues to hone, Illa J delivers his art on Yancey Boys, saying "Let me tell you my mission / I'm here to inspire / to bring together the earth, wind and fire."

The Background:

When Jay Dee passed away from complications relating to lupus in February 2006, he left behind an extraordinary legacy of production work, including hits for Common, Janet Jackson, and Busta Rhymes. One mother lode of previously untouched beats dates from his time working on the Pharcyde's sophomore album, Labcabincalifornia (Delicious Vinyl, 1995). As Delicious Vinyl owner and founder Michael "Mike Floss" Ross explains: "From '95 through '98 Jay Dee was my go-to guy for hot beats and remixes. He was always making beats, always. So there was a select amount of tracks that he composed for me during that time, tracks as good as anything he'd done, only they never got used. When I finally met Illa J last year, I gave him a CD containing those unreleased beats."

In a case of pure serendipity, 21 year-old Illa J had just relocated from Detroit to Los Angeles and constructed a studio built using Jay Dee's recording equipment. He dubbed it Yancey Boys Studios in tribute to their fraternal bond. "Dilla was 12 years older than me," Illa J says. "So back in the day in Detroit I was just a little kid, sitting on the stairs in our house, watching him make those first beats for Slum Village. I always felt my brother's tracks and had an instinct for what I wanted to do over them." When Illa J set to work in early '08 recording the album, the project flowed quickly as he entered the proverbial can't miss zone. The name of the studio rightly became the title of the finished album, Yancey Boys, available online and in stores everywhere on Delicious Vinyl Records.
